Message from Dean
Dean Kazuaki Kawamoto

We are currently surrounded by urgent challenges. Examples include energy supply and resource
depletion, climate change countermeasures, biodiversity conservation, securing water and food,
infrastructure development and maintenance, waste management, and issues associated with the
advancement of digital technology. These challenges are complex and involve multiple interrelated
factors, making them impossible to tackle in a single research field. Addressing these challenges requires
an interdisciplinary approach that takes a holistic perspective that transcends academic disciplines, while
also cultivating the talent to boldly tackle these issues.
Nagasaki University aims to contribute to Planetary Health, which seeks to optimize the Earth’s
ecosystems and society, by encouraging changes in our own awareness and behavior in order to resolve
these issues. To that end, in April 2024, we established the Graduate School of Integrated Science and
Technology, an interdisciplinary graduate school comprised of the School of Information and Data
Sciences, the School of Engineering, the Faculty of Environmental Science, and the Faculty of Fisheries.
A graduate school encompassing such a diverse range of fields is rare even globally. The Japanese name
of this graduate school reflects our aspiration to “create broadly” not only tangible products but also
knowledge, ideas, technologies, methodologies, and more.
Collaborative research across multiple fields will become even more important in order to drive
innovation in the future. Research in each individual field is the foundation and is, of course, important.
However, these do not exist in isolation. The Graduate School of Integrated Science and Technology
provides a platform for faculty and students with different specialties and perspectives to come together
for education and research. Specifically, we offer the Program for Symbiotic Science and Technology,
which primarily focuses on fundamental research; the Program for Frontiers of Marine Science and the
Program for Water and Environmental Science, which promote practical research; and the Program for
Advanced Green Sustainable Science and Technology (a five-year doctoral program) which aims at
interdisciplinary research. To our younger students, I urge you first to study and research to firmly
establish your field of expertise. I would also be delighted if you could understand the importance of
collaborative research among faculty members.
At the Graduate School of Integrated Science and Technology, approximately 200 faculty members
are eager to work with you. Why not join us in taking on the challenge of realizing Planetary Health?
